The interface changes. The need remains.
People use search engines and AI assistants to understand problems, compare options and decide what to do next. A company needs to be clear about what it does, who it serves and why its claims deserve trust wherever that discovery happens.
GEO stands for generative engine optimization. You may also hear answer engine optimization, or AEO. For me, the practical question underneath the terminology is simple: can a system find and understand the information that makes this company relevant?
Make the expertise legible.
Keep the identity consistent.
A founder’s role, company description and areas of expertise should agree across the site. Structured data can express those relationships, but it should describe the same information readers can see.
Give answers that carry their own context.
Explain the topic directly. Name the company or person when needed. Make a case study understandable to someone arriving in the middle of the story. Put the evidence close to the claim so it can be checked.
Build from firsthand knowledge.
A founder’s explanation of a difficult decision, a product’s actual behavior and a clearly sourced milestone give a page substance. Generic content adds little to a conversation already full of generic answers.
Keep the technical foundation sound.
Content should be accessible, internally connected and available without relying on a visitor to run complex interactions. Google’s guidance for its AI search features continues to emphasize foundational SEO and original, helpful content.
A mention is a signal. Learn from it.
AI answers can vary with the question, platform and time. A single mention is useful evidence of that particular observation. It is not a guarantee of ongoing placement or a substitute for understanding whether the right people are reaching the product.
I’m interested in connecting those observations to the next decision: what the brand should explain better, where information is missing and what customers need next. That feedback loop is central to the ColdStart thesis.
Does GEO replace SEO?
I treat them as connected work. Useful content, crawlable pages and credible evidence support discovery across both. Different platforms still need to be observed on their own terms.
Can a website guarantee inclusion in AI answers?
No. A site can improve clarity, accessibility and relevance, but it cannot control an external platform’s answers or guarantee a ranking.
